Kaziranga jeep safari to close from May 19

Staff Reporter, Kaziranga: The Jeep Safari at Assam’s renowned Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve will remain closed indefinitely starting May 19, 2025, due to the onset of the monsoon season. The announcement was made by the Chief Minister’s Office via a post on X, citing an official order from the state Forest Department. “In view of persistent bad weather and poor road conditions, Jeep Safari at Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve will remain closed from 19th May 2025 until further notice,” the statement read. Kaziranga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest national park in Northeast India, attracts both domestic and international tourists, primarily for its iconic population of one-horned rhinoceroses. The park also hosts a rich diversity of wildlife, including tigers, elephants, panthers, bears, and over a thousand species of birds. Spread across the Golaghat and Nagaon districts, the park’s terrain lies between the mighty Brahmaputra River to the north and the Karbi Anglong hills to the south, making it prone to seasonal flooding during the monsoon. Authorities typically close the park during this period to ensure the safety of visitors and to allow the natural ecosystem to rejuvenate. While the jeep safari will remain suspended, the park’s management will continue monitoring conditions for any future announcements regarding reopening. Declared a National Park in 1974, Kaziranga remains a vital ecological treasure and a symbol of successful wildlife conservation in India.
