Assam Governor Attends Function Honouring Japanese Speaker Fukushiro Nukaga

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Saturday attended a ceremonial function at the Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati to honour visiting Japanese Speaker Nukaga Fukushiro. The event was graced by Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary and Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, reflecting the growing Indo-Japanese collaboration with a focus on Assam and the Northeast. In his address, Governor Acharya highlighted the centuries-old spiritual and cultural ties between India and Japan, recalling the historic journey of Indian monk Bodhisena to Japan in 736 AD. He lauded the strengthening bilateral relationship under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, particularly in areas of strategic cooperation, infrastructure, and connectivity. “The convergence of Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific Policy and India’s Act East Policy is positioning Assam as a crucial gateway to Southeast Asia,” said Acharya. He noted Japan’s substantial developmental support through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), citing key projects such as the Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge, the Srirampur-Dalu road corridor, and urban infrastructure initiatives in Guwahati. The Governor also praised Japan’s role in capacity building, including the initiative to train 100,000 Indian youth annually in Japanese language and geriatric care—an agreement stemming from the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit. Calling for sustained dialogue and cooperation, Governor Acharya emphasized Assam’s potential as a strategic link connecting South and Southeast Asia. The visit of Speaker Nukaga, he said, signifies another important milestone in the deepening Indo-Japanese partnership.
