Heroin worth ₹3 crore seized; two women arrested

A Correspondent, Sribhumi: In a significant breakthrough against cross-border narcotics trafficking, Nilambazar police in Assam have seized heroin worth an estimated ₹3 crore and arrested two women from Tripura believed to be part of a well-organized drug smuggling network. Acting on precise intelligence inputs, a joint operation by Nilambazar and Sribhumi police led to the interception of a suspicious consignment during a routine train check. The two arrested suspects—identified as Manju Debnath and her sister-in-law Pushpa Debnath—are both residents of Agartala, the capital of Tripura. According to police officials, the heroin was meticulously packed in 55 soap cases and hidden inside a travel bag. The consignment was reportedly en route to Tripura when it was intercepted in Karimganj district, which borders the northeastern state. Preliminary findings suggest the duo's deep-rooted involvement in a broader narcotics distribution network stretching across Assam and Tripura. Authorities believe more arrests could follow as the investigation continues. This latest seizure comes amid rising concerns over drug trafficking routes through the Northeastern region, which has increasingly become a transit point for heroin and other illicit substances smuggled from across international borders. Police have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and both women are currently in custody for further interrogation. Officials have reiterated their commitment to combating drug trafficking and have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
