News Desk, Imphal: In a major counter-insurgency operation, Manipur Police Commandos, in coordination with central security forces, arrested eight individuals associated with various underground groups involved in extortion across sensitive areas of the state. Among those detained is a 60-year-old man linked to the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), Pambei faction, identified as Hijam Jiten alias Ibai. Authorities say he played a key role in extortion and recruitment activities. The joint operations, conducted across Imphal West, Bishnupur, Imphal East, and Thoubal districts, led to the recovery of eight mobile phones, extortion demand letters, ₹1,000 in cash, and several incriminating documents. Three members of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party – People’s War Group (KCP-PWG) were apprehended from hiding spots in Imphal West. They were identified as Lambalmayum Bobo Meetei (41), Yumnam Chandra Meetei (40), and Oinam James Singh (30). In addition, Ningthoujam Abungte Singh (36) and Oinam Milan Singh (53), both affiliated with the proscribed People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Progressive), were arrested from Bishnupur and Imphal East, respectively.Another significant arrest includes Thongkhohou Touthang (34), a cadre of the Chin Kuki National Defence Force (CKNDF), a non-SoO outfit reportedly active in Moreh and bordering regions of Myanmar. According to police sources, the individuals were not only involved in extortion but were also recruiting youths into insurgent ranks and coercing government employees for funds. Investigations are ongoing to uncover deeper links and disrupt insurgent financing networks. Authorities have intensified vigilance across Manipur as part of a broader push to restore peace and curb underground activities.
