6 writers from Assam & Manipur win Yuva & Bal Sahitya awards

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: In a proud moment for the Northeast, six writers from Assam and Manipur have been honoured with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar and Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2025, recognizing their outstanding contributions to literature in regional languages. The Sahitya Akademi, India’s premier literary body, announced the awards on Wednesday, with four writers from Assam and two from Manipur being featured among this year’s 47 recipients nationwide. In the Bal Sahitya Puraskar category, Surendra Mohan Das received the award for his Assamese poetry collection Mainaahatar Padya, while Binay Kumar Brahma was honoured for his Bodo short story collection Khanthi Bwswn Arw Akhu Danai. The Yuva Puraskar was awarded to Suprakash Bhuyan for his Assamese short story compilation Kuchiyanama, and Amar Khungur Boro for his Bodo poetry collection Ang Asur. From Manipur, AK Jiten won the Yuva Puraskar for Epic Khoyum Nongdam Cow, and Shanto M received the Bal Sahitya Puraskar for Angangshinggee Shannabungsida. Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the awardees via social media, stating, “Congratulations to all the four winners of the Sahitya Akademi Bal Puraskar and Yuva Puraskar in Assamese and Bodo languages. These achievements will inspire the next generation of writers.” The awards were approved by the Akademi’s Executive Board, chaired by President Madhav Kaushik, following a thorough selection process by juries for each language. This year, 23 writers were chosen for the Yuva Puraskar and 24 for the Bal Sahitya Puraskar. Notably, no Yuva Puraskar was awarded in the Dogri language. Each award includes a copper plaque and a cash prize of ₹50,000, with a formal presentation ceremony scheduled later this year. This recognition not only highlights the literary talent of the Northeast but also underlines the growing national presence of regional language writers.
