Daylight robbery near SBI main branch in Kokrajhar

A Correspondent, Kokrajhar: In yet another alarming incident of broad daylight crime, a daring robbery took place today near the SBI Main Branch in Kokrajhar, where unidentified miscreants smashed a vehicle's window and looted Rs 2 lakh in cash. The victim, Barenda Basumatary, a businessman hailing from Gwjwnpuri village, had briefly parked his Mahindra Bolero to photocopy documents, leaving a bag containing the cash inside the vehicle. Taking advantage of the short window of opportunity, an unknown individual broke into the car and made off with the money before anyone could intervene. A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged at Kokrajhar Police Station, and a formal investigation is now underway. Authorities have stated that efforts are being made to identify and apprehend the culprit. This incident is the latest in a troubling pattern of daylight robberies in the town. Just last year, on June 26, two men on a motorcycle snatched a bag containing Rs 34 lakh from a person near Axis Bank on JD Road. Less than two weeks later, on July 9, a forest department official lost Rs 2.15 lakh near UCO Bank after being lured away by a decoy distraction involving fake currency thrown behind his car. The growing number of such incidents has sparked public outrage and renewed anxiety over the town’s safety conditions. Residents and business owners alike are expressing frustration over the lack of visible security measures in key commercial areas. In response to the latest theft, local authorities have assured the public of increased patrolling and enhanced surveillance in vulnerable zones. Police officials have also urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid leaving valuables unattended in vehicles. As investigations continue, the public awaits swift action and visible improvements in law enforcement to curb the rising tide of urban crime in Kokrajhar.
