Cotton University Celebrates 125th Foundation Day

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: Cotton University marked its 125th Foundation Day with a grand celebration at the Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha Auditorium on Monday. The event was graced by Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Prof. Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, who delivered the Foundation Day lecture titled “Empowering Educators – Charting New Frontiers in Academia.” Prof. Pandit stressed the evolving role of educators in the era of artificial intelligence and digital transformation, urging a shift in focus from producing job seekers to nurturing job creators and innovators. The occasion was attended by Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Guwahati MP Bijulee Kalita Medhi, Cotton University Vice Chancellor Prof. Ramesh Ch. Deka, and Registrar Dr. Arindam Garg. Minister Pegu congratulated the university on its 125-year journey and emphasized the importance of producing skilled, employable graduates ready for modern challenges. MP Bijulee Kalita Medhi lauded the contributions of Cottonians, past and present, in shaping the university’s legacy. In his address, Prof. Deka highlighted Cotton’s recent achievements, including the prestigious PAIR grant of ₹14 crore from the Anusandhan National Research Foundation. The university also felicitated Devajit Saikia, BCCI Secretary and Advocate General of Assam, for his exceptional contributions to Indian cricket. A showreel titled “Echoes of Excellence – The Cotton Legacy in Motion” chronicled the university’s storied history and achievements. Student excellence was celebrated through the Achievers’ Awards, with special honors such as the Durgeswar Sarma Memorial Award, Nagendra Nath Tamuli Memorial Award, and Dr. Pabindranath Datta Memorial Award. The ceremony began with a welcome address by Dr. Arindam Garg and concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Daisy Das, convenor of the event.
