Staff Reporter, Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday reiterated his government's firm stance against terrorism and its sympathisers, revealing that 53 individuals have been arrested in the state for making pro-Pakistan statements and allegedly supporting terrorist activities.Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Sarma disclosed the arrest of three more individuals in the ongoing crackdown. One suspect, Ajim, was apprehended by Karbi Anglong Police, while Hasinur and Abdul were taken into custody by Dhubri and Lakhimpur Police, respectively. “While India has eliminated over 100 Pakistan-based terrorists, Assam continues to take strong action against their sympathisers,” Sarma wrote, adding, “53 traitors are in jail.”The arrests come in the wake of Operation Sindoor — a strategic military response launched by the Indian Armed Forces on May 7. The operation, targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK), was in retaliation to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The military offensive has reportedly eliminated over 100 terrorists, showcasing India’s evolving defence posture under the current administration. In a separate but related commentary, Sarma reflected on India’s geopolitical strategy following the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. In a strongly worded post on X, he praised the Indian military for its decisive victory but criticized the then political leadership for failing to secure long-term strategic benefits from the outcome. He remarked, “India's 1971 military triumph was historic, but the diplomatic follow-through was lacking. We broke Pakistan in two and facilitated the birth of Bangladesh, yet failed to convert that into enduring strategic advantages.”Sarma also highlighted the ideological shift in Bangladesh, pointing out that while India had backed the emergence of a secular state, Islam was declared the official religion by 1988. “What was meant to be a secular ally has become a hotbed for political Islam, undermining the values India aimed to uphold,” he stated. The Chief Minister's statements underline a dual message: unwavering action against terror and a call for deeper introspection on India's past diplomatic strategies.
