ASF outbreak in Barpeta: Dist. admin. issues prohibitory orders to contain spread

Staff Reporter, Barpeta: Following a confirmed outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Gahia village under the Sarukhetri Development Block, the Barpeta district administration has imposed urgent restrictions to curb the spread of the disease. Acting swiftly, District Magistrate (In-charge) Diganta Baishya, ACS, invoked Section 16 of the Assam Epidemic Disease Act, 2023, to issue prohibitory orders across the district. In an effort to prevent further transmission of the highly contagious disease, the sale of pigs, piglets, pork, and related products has been completely banned in all markets and public spaces within Barpeta district. The transport of pigs has also been restricted both within and beyond the district, with the exception of movement via the National Highway. Authorities have warned against the improper disposal of pig carcasses. The public is strictly prohibited from discarding dead animals in open fields, water bodies, or other exposed areas, as this could escalate the spread of the infection. The administration has also declared that suppressing information about pig deaths or visible symptoms of ASF will be treated as a punishable offence. Citizens are urged to immediately report any such cases to veterinary or district officials. As part of the containment measures, gatherings of four or more persons have been prohibited within a one-kilometre radius of the affected area in Gahia. The district administration has appealed for full cooperation from the public, emphasizing the seriousness of the outbreak and the need for collective vigilance to protect both animal health and public welfare. Violators of the order will face legal action under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
