Staff Reporter, Guwahati: The Homen Borgohain Memorial Debate, held at Cotton University, brought together young debaters from across Assam to deliberate on the motion: “Caste census will ensure the concept of social equality in India.” Organised by the Cotton University Students’ Union (CUSU) in collaboration with the SFI Cotton University Unit, the event paid tribute to the late author and journalist Homen Borgohain. Vice Chancellor Prof. Ramesh Ch. Deka inaugurated the event, which featured passionate arguments on social justice, constitutional principles, and the role of data in policymaking. The panel of judges included Abhishek Kabra (Tezpur University), Dr. Jintu Gohain (Paschim Guwahati College), and Advocate Umi Deka Barua (Gauhati High Court). Abhishek Kabra noted, “The problem with a casteless society is that it’s still run by people who know exactly which caste they belong to,” urging participants to use their voice for those who cannot speak. Dibrugarh University emerged as the Best Team, while Rajdeep Mahanta of Cotton University was named Best Debater. Utpal Jyoti Borah (Dibrugarh University) and Gyan Jyoti Sharma (Cotton University) secured second and third places respectively. Promising Debater awards went to Rahul Rohan Paul (Gauhati University) and Chaini Bhuyan (Assam Medical College). Jury Special awards were presented to Anuprerona Mahanta and Utpal Jyoti Borah. The debate also featured remarks from former SFI General Secretary Nirangkush Nath and CPIM state secretary Suprakash Talukdar. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Geetartha Bora, Secretary of the Debating & Symposium Section. The debate reaffirmed the role of youth in challenging social structures and highlighted the power of public discourse in shaping a just society.
