Tezpur, January 28: Renowned writer Gita Upadhyay from Chanmari area here has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri Award rejoicing all sections in historic Tezpur city. Among other trailblazers shining at Padma Shri honour from the region, a two time recipient of the Sahitya Academy Award, Geeta Upadhyaya is well-known for her contributions to literature in both Assamese and Nepali languages. Granddaughter of freedom fighter Chabilal Upadhayay, the noted litterateur at the age of 78 years old dedicated nearly 23 years of her life to the teaching profession. Amidst her tight professional schedule she has been contributing to both Assamese and Nepali literature strengthening the communal bonding among the people of Assamese and Nepali communities. Currently she is physically unwell owing to her age related issues. However, despite that she continues her practice of literature. After the announcement of the Padma Shri honour to the humanitarian figure in the Tezpur town several individuals, including local MLA, Prithiraj Rabha, DC, Sonitpur Ankur Bharali, ADCs Kabita Kakati Konwar, Garga Mohan Das, Twahir Alom,Co-District Commissioner,Naduar Raj Baruah alongwith other administrative officials visited her residence to congratulate her. The news has brought immense pride and joy to the people of Tezpur, who are celebrating her achievement. Born in 1939, she is a well-known octogenarian writer, translator and academician. Retired as Head of Department of Political Science from Sibsagar College the renowned litterateur has credit of translation of many books into both Assamese and Nepali languages. She has already brought laurels by achieving Sahitya Akademi Award in 2012 and 2016 for two times for translating Karengor Ligiri of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala from Assamese to Nepali and her creative work Janmabhumi Mero Swadesh. In Nepali. She has also written many novels in both Assamese and Nepali languages. Among many of her works, the translation of ‘An Frankor Diary’ from English was highly acclaimed. She has written about Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva’s life and philosophy in Nepali language. Besides this she has translated the book ‘Abhijatri’ by Nirupama Borgohain into Nepali language, while many other books penned in Nepali language by her have been translated into Assamese language.
