At least 44 people, including nine policemen, have been injured in violent protests in Karbi Anglong district demanding the eviction of encroachers. The clashes took place during a protest organized by the Karbi Student' Union and the youth branch of the Autonomous State Demand Committee. The protesters marched to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council office to submit a memorandum demanding eviction.The protesters clashed with police. Some of the protesters even started throwing stones at the police. The situation turned violent. Police fired batons and opened fire to disperse the protesters. 35 protesters and nine policemen were injured in the clashes. The council's chief executive member Tuliram Ranghang had called a meeting with various organizations to resolve the issue. It was during that meeting that it was unanimously decided that 1,983 families who were allegedly encroaching on the grazing areas would be evicted. The encroachment case is pending in the Guwahati High Court now.
