NHPC issues flood warning as Subansiri river water levels surge

Staff Reporter, Guwahati, July 1: The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has issued a flood alert following a significant rise in water levels at the Subansiri hydropower project in Arunachal Pradesh. The NHPC control room has reported unprecedented rainfall over the Subansiri river basin, prompting early warnings to downstream areas. An estimated 16,000 cubic meters per second (cumecs) of water is expected to be released from the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project Dam. The release, anticipated to commence at 5 am today, is projected to peak around 8 am, potentially affecting areas downstream, particularly in the Namni region of the Subansiri river. The NHPC has urged residents in Dhemaji and North Lakhimpur districts to remain vigilant and informed about the situation. Concerns have heightened over the possibility of opening several sluice gates to manage the rising water levels effectively. The surge in the Subansiri river's water level is attributed to continuous heavy rainfall in the neighboring regions of Arunachal Pradesh. This development has raised alarms among local communities, emphasizing the imminent threat of flooding in the lower reaches.Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing preparedness and caution among residents as NHPC prepares to manage the heightened water flow from the hydropower project.
