Tezpur, February 26: Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today attended the 19th convocation of Tezpur University in presence of President of India Ram Nath Kovind. Saying that Tezpur University was established as a result of historic Assam Accord, the Chief Minister, in his speech, paid tributes to the martyrs of the Assam Agitation. In this year’s convocation, a total of 1246 students have been conferred degrees and diplomas. Amongst them, 60 are PhDs, 717 are Postgraduates, 401 are Undergraduates (B. Tech / B. Sc / BA / .Sc. B. Ed. / BA B. Ed / B. Com) and 68 are PG Diplomas. The President presented gold medals to a few of the toppers of a total of 45 programmes. The Chief Minister said that Tezpur University, since its establishment in 1994, has been making concerted efforts to reignite the glorious tradition of knowledge and research based education system of India. It has continued to make everyone proud with its remarkable contributions and achievements, he opined. He expressed happiness that the perseverance and hard work put in by the faculty members and researchers of Tezpur University have produced outstanding innovations. He also announced that the state government would build a modern state-of-the-art sports complex at the University. Saying that Tezpur is a historic and culturally rich town where personalities like Jyotiprasad Agarwala, Bishnu Prasad Rabha etc contributed to Assamese society, the Chief Minister extended his congratulations to all the graduating students of the University who received their degrees and diplomas at today’s Convocation. First lady Savita Kovind, Governor & Chancellor of the University Prof Jagdish Mukhi, Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu, VC Tezpur University Prof V.K. Jain were also present on the occasion.
