President Kovind, Assam Governor, CM attends 19th TU convocation

Guwahati, February 26: The 19th Convocation of Tezpur University held today at the University campus in Tezpur today witnessed conferring of degrees upon 1246 students. The Convocation was addressed by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind in the presence of the First Lady  Savita Kovind, the Governor Prof.Jagdish Mukhi and the Chief Minister Dr.Himanta Biswa Sarma. Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi who is also the Chancellor of the University while addressing the graduates said that higher education and academic research have always been the most crucial aspects in nation-building. Quality of life and environment in any country is determined significantly by the educational competence of its citizens. In India, higher education has made significant contributions to economic progress, social development, political stability and environmental sustainability. He said that he was happy that Tezpur University has been able to join the league of the reputed institutions and made visible contributions to the nation-building process. Speaking on the occasion the Governor said, “Today’s fast-changing world is characterized by pressing challenges with issues related to economic equality and stability, environmental security, socio-cultural trust, and harmony. We can only deal with these challenges by relying on the advancements made in various frontiers of science, technology, and humanitarian scholarships. In this regard, the academic programmes offered in the various departments and centres of Tezpur University reflect the sensitivity of this university to regional and global competitive requirements.” Further the Governor said that Tezpur University was created as a result of the Assam Movement which was a manifestation of the identity consciousness of the people of this region. Since its inception, the University has been able to build an impressive infrastructure of higher education and research facilities. In the last couple of years, the rankings secured by the University in the assessments carried out by different national and international agencies reflected it’s impressive performance. The Governor also emphasized  that there should be a constant reminder that there are still miles to go before the university can proudly claim itself as a preferred destination in the global arena.  Moreover in the wake of New Education Policy 2020, he  urged upon the university to be a front runner in implementing the provisions of the policy to take our higher education to a new height. Prof. Mukhi also called upon the graduates to continue the quest to acquire knowledge throughout their lives and utilize the knowledge to educate their fellow human beings. He said that the ever-increasing competitive vibes of today’s times have hardly left any room for complacence and he hoped that Tezpur University reaches the zenith of success in the coming days and strengthen its reputation in the national and global scales.bIt may be noted that in this year’s convocation, a total of 1246 students have been conferred degrees and diplomas. Amongst them, 60 are PhDs, 717 are Postgraduates, 401 are Undergraduates (B. Tech / B. Sc / BA / .Sc. B. Ed. / BA B. Ed / B. Com) and 68 are PG Diplomas. The Convocation was attended by the Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu, Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University Prof Vinod Kumar Jain, Registrar, Deans, Heads of Departments and Centres and faculty members.
