Nagaon, Aug 12 : National Librarians' Day was celebrated today on the occasion of the 129th birth anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the father of Library & Information Science in India, at Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya, Nagaon. Shekharjyoti Neog, Asstt. The Librarian of the University welcomed all the dignitaries to the virtual platform. The program started with Lighting of the Lamp and floral tribute to Dr. S. R. Ranganathan by the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Professors, other officials and library staff of the University. The program was inaugurated by Dr. Hitesh Deka, Vice-Chancellor of the University. He explained the significance of the day and opined that the books and other readable documents of an institutional library should not be made available only to the readers of that institution only but these should be made available to be accessed by every section of the society so that all sections of the society can get benefited. He also stated that the university has already taken measures to open the university's library for all educational institutions in Nagaon and for the public. Speaking on the theme "Role of a Library in Educational and Social Transition'' Dr. Sahin Jafri, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Assamese said the use of a library helps a society to move forward smoothly, library should be well organized for the readers so that they can get an environment of study. She also stressed on the access of digital libraries and public libraries for upliftment of the society. Dr. Nayanmoni Saikia, Deputy Registrar (Academic) also spoke on the need of reading, benefits of reading and the scientific process of book reading. Along with the dignitaries like Dr. Mrinal Kumar Bora, Registrar; Dr. Sekhar kanti Sarkar, Deputy Registrar (Administration); Bichitra Bikash, Assistant Registrar (Academic); the Professors, Officers, employees, Research Scholars and Students of the University participated in the event. Rubul Das, Library Professional Assistant of the Library of the Guwahati Campus of the University delivered the concluding remark and Tanmaya Sarmah, Library Professional Assistant, Central Library, MSSV offered the vote of thanks at the end of the program.
