Maligaon, 29 July: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has succeeded in capturing a host of new streams of traffic. Railways being a faster and cheaper mode of transport, this will boost the local economy by making larger markets across the country accessible to local farmers and traders, thereby improving their economic condition. Recently, NFR carried black turmeric (kali haldi), raw turmeric, fresh lemon etc. from Assam to various parts of the country. Railways have also re-captured traffic like betel nuts, black tea & vermin-compost etc. A total of 605 Kg of black turmeric (kali haldi) has been transported on 9 July from Mariani station to New Jalpaiguri station. Apart from it, 1890 Kg of raw turmeric has also been transported from New Tinsukia to New Delhi on 14 July. It will give a boost to the local turmeric growers in the region. 54 cartoons of lemon were booked for Guwahati from New Tinsukia station on 1st June. Two more consignments were transported from New Tinsukia on 15 July & 26 July respectively for Guwahati & New Delhi consisting of 1770 Kg & 2150 Kg subsequently; these lemons are also being exported to Dubai and United Kingdom through air from there. Due to Covid pandemic, regular traffic of few agro products has petered out. NFR is recapturing its transportation across the country. As a result, NFR could load 2.93 tonnes of raw betel nuts from New Tinsukia to Dimapur. One consignment of 540 Kg of vermicompost was sent from Mariani to Lalgarh (Rajasthan) on 17 July after a gap of three years (approx.). These efforts of NFR will give a boost to organic farming in this region. Black tea is also being transported in regular manner to Dimapur and Rajendra Nagar stations after resumption of train services connecting these stations.
