Dhaka: The 56th Director General-level Border Conference between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF) will be held from August 25 to 28 at the BGB headquarters in Peelkhana, Dhaka, the BGB announced in a statement. A high-level Indian delegation, led by the BSF Director General, will take part in the four-day discussions. Key agenda items include preventing border killings, push-ins, and illegal infiltration; tackling cross-border crimes such as drug, arms, and contraband smuggling; regulating development within 150 yards of the border; preventing unauthorized construction; preserving riverbanks and ensuring fair water sharing; enhancing integrated border management; and easing tensions following recent anti-Bangladesh narratives in Indian media. The last DG-level talks were held in Delhi in February. In a related development, the East Khasi Hills district administration in Meghalaya has enforced a night curfew within 1 km of the Indo-Bangladesh border’s Zero Line since May 9, under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Effective from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for two months from May 8, the curfew aims to curb illegal crossings, unauthorized gatherings of five or more persons, carrying potential weapons, and smuggling of cattle, contraband, betelnut, betel leaves, dry fish, bidis, cigarettes, and tea leaves.
