Woman thief arrested for theft at Ambubachi Mela

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: In a swift action by Guwahati Police, a woman was arrested on Wednesday at the Kalipur Ashram PCR for allegedly stealing valuables from a devotee attending the ongoing Ambubachi Mela, one of Assam’s largest and most revered religious gatherings. The accused was caught red-handed by alert on-duty police personnel, who had been maintaining strict surveillance in view of the massive footfall and previous reports of petty theft at the mela premises. A subsequent search led to the recovery of a Realme 11 Pro smartphone, Rs 5,496 in cash, and a blue purse, all confirmed to belong to a devotee who was partaking in the spiritual rituals. The woman is now in police custody, and legal proceedings have been initiated. Authorities have also launched a deeper investigation to ascertain if the accused is linked to a larger theft syndicate possibly operating in and around the mela site. With lakhs of devotees thronging Guwahati for the Ambubachi Mela, police have urged visitors to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activities.
