Staff Reporter, Guwahati: An Assam court has summoned noted graffiti artist Marshall Baruah in connection with a case arising from the Bharalumukh protest held in Guwahati last year against the proposed felling of trees for a public transport infrastructure project. The summons was issued by the court following proceedings related to the controversial protest and graffiti campaign that drew widespread public attention. Baruah had come under the spotlight in November 2024 after creating graffiti artwork during the Bharalumukh agitation. The artwork, which was critical of the state government's decision regarding tree felling, led to his arrest along with youth activist Ankuman Bordoloi. Both were subsequently sent to judicial custody and charged under multiple sections of the law. The Bharalumukh protests had witnessed participation from environmental activists, artists and concerned citizens who opposed the proposed cutting of trees for the project. The graffiti campaign became a symbol of the movement and sparked a debate on freedom of expression, environmental conservation and public protest. According to reports, the latest court summons requires Baruah to appear before the court in connection with the ongoing proceedings in the case. The development has once again brought attention to the legal battle surrounding the protest and the broader issues it raised. The case continues to be closely watched by artists, activists and civil society groups across Assam, who view it as significant in the context of environmental activism and freedom of artistic expression.
