A Correspondent, Morigaon: As the flood season approaches Assam, authorities at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary have launched comprehensive measures to protect wildlife, personnel, and sanctuary infrastructure from impending flood threats.Sanctuary Ranger Pranjal Baruah shared with ANI that preparations include strengthening infrastructure, repairing boats, and accumulating necessary relief supplies. “We are actively preparing for floods by developing facilities and stockpiling essentials,” Baruah said.A critical part of the strategy involves relocating elephant camps situated in vulnerable low-lying areas to higher elevations. This move aims to safeguard the captive elephants from rising waters. “Our elephant camps will be shifted to hillsides to ensure the safety of the animals,” Baruah added, assuring that adequate food supplies will be maintained throughout.Additionally, residents living near the sanctuary in flood-prone zones will be temporarily moved to safer locations. Temporary shelters will be established at key points to facilitate smooth management of resources, accommodation, and emergency services. To support the health and well-being of forest staff, health camps are planned before the flood season begins, ensuring medical assistance is accessible. “We will organise health camps for field workers so they receive necessary care before the floods arrive,” Baruah explained.Authorities have also appealed to the government for essential items such as food rations and logistical support to bolster the sanctuary’s flood readiness. “We have requested the government for ration and other critical materials to be supplied to our camps,” said Baruah. An emergency response team has been constituted to handle rescue efforts and conduct damage assessments post-flood. Repair work on identified infrastructure is underway, and travel routes are being mapped out for efficient evacuation and relief distribution. With proactive measures in place, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is strengthening its capacity to face the monsoon floods, prioritizing the safety of its diverse wildlife and dedicated staff while minimizing potential damage to sanctuary assets.
