Honeymoon Horror: Wife Plotted Murder of Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya, Says Police

News Desk, Shillong/Ghazipur: In a shocking twist to what began as a honeymoon trip, the autopsy report of Raja Raghuvanshi, whose body was found in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls in Meghalaya, has confirmed that he died from two sharp head injuries, inflicted with a cutting weapon—suspected to be a machete found near the scene. Meghalaya Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) chief Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor confirmed the findings, stating that Raja was brutally hacked during the trip. The gruesome crime came to light after Raja and his wife, Sonam, went missing on May 23 while vacationing in Cherrapunjee. Investigations revealed that Sonam plotted the murder, allegedly hiring three men — Vishal Chauhan, Raj Kushwaha, and Akash Rajput — to kill her husband. All three have been arrested and confessed to the crime. Sonam, who fled after the murder, was arrested from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, after surrendering early Monday morning. The SIT dispatched teams to Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh for arrests and will seek transit remand to bring the accused to Shillong. Police are also probing the couple's strained relationship, based on early testimonies and patterns observed.
Raja’s mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, told reporters that her son had been reluctant to go on the honeymoon and only agreed after Sonam insisted and booked their tickets. Notably, Sonam had not arranged a return ticket. The case remains under active investigation, with police hinting at more arrests and deeper motives yet to be uncovered.
