Staff Reporter, Guwahati: Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi officially took over as the new president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Tuesday, marking a significant leadership transition for the Congress in Assam as it gears up for the 2026 Assembly elections. In a formal handover ceremony held at Rajiv Bhawan, the state Congress headquarters in Guwahati, Gogoi received the mantle from outgoing APCC chief Bhupen Kumar Borah, who had helmed the party’s state unit for over three years. The event saw the presence of senior Congress leaders, including AICC General Secretary Jitendra Singh and Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia. Ahead of assuming office, Gogoi paid a visit to the iconic Kamakhya Temple, where he offered prayers for strength and guidance in his new political role. In his first address as APCC president, Gogoi emphasized a return to the Congress’s ideological roots and a renewed commitment to inclusivity, equality, and grassroots mobilization. “Inspired by the values of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Hiteswar Saikia, and my father, Tarun Gogoi, we will move forward with unity and purpose,” he stated. Gogoi’s appointment comes at a politically charged juncture. The young MP has recently faced criticism from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over controversial allegations involving his British wife’s alleged links to Pakistan’s ISI—a charge he has categorically denied. Demonstrating his grassroots strength and organizational reach, Gogoi undertook a symbolic three-day padayatra from Sivasagar to Guwahati before taking office. The journey included key stops in Titabor, Jorhat, Nagaon, Morigaon, and Jagiroad, where enthusiastic supporters turned out in large numbers to greet him. Party insiders see Gogoi’s leadership as a strategic move aimed at energizing the Congress’s base and reasserting its relevance in Assam politics. As the state’s principal opposition party, the Congress now looks to reorganize and revitalize itself under Gogoi’s stewardship ahead of a crucial electoral battle in 2026.
