DNA Match Confirmed for 220 Victims of Air India Crash; 202 Bodies Handed Over

Ahmedabad: In the aftermath of the devastating Air India Flight AI171 crash, the Gujarat Health Department confirmed on Friday that DNA identification has been completed for 220 victims. As of 11:45 a.m. today, 202 bodies have been formally handed over to the families, with repatriation underway for both Indian and foreign nationals. The tragic crash occurred on June 12 when the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all 241 people on board, including passengers and crew. The crash also claimed several lives on the ground after the aircraft struck a hostel housing medical students. The repatriated remains include 151 Indian nationals, 34 British citizens, seven Portuguese nationals, one Canadian, and nine non-passengers, believed to be ground or airport staff. Of the released bodies, 15 were transported by air, while 187 were taken by road via ambulances. Health Minister Rushikesh Patel shared the update on social media platform X, assuring that efforts are ongoing to hand over the remaining bodies once identification is completed. Forensic experts, disaster response teams, and state authorities continue to work round the clock to ensure a dignified process and support for grieving families. A DGCA-led investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash, with early indications pointing to engine failure. The incident ranks among the deadliest aviation disasters in India's history.
