Body of missing Assam Civil Services aspirant found in Uttarakhand

A Correspondent, Haflong: The body of Rosmita Hojai, a 25-year-old civil services aspirant from Assam’s Dima Hasao district who had been missing since June 6, was recovered on Monday from the Ganga river in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district, authorities confirmed. Rosmita, a resident of Sontilla Hojai village, had travelled from Assam to Delhi to appear for the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) examination. Following the exam, she reportedly journeyed to Rishikesh along with two male acquaintances, including Hemant Sharma, a former classmate from Haryana. The trio had planned a camping trip in the Shivpuri area of Rishikesh. However, according to initial accounts, Rosmita went missing on the evening of June 6 near the Ganga river. Her companions told police that she had disappeared near the water, and a local eyewitness reportedly saw a woman drowning in the river at the time. Uttarakhand Police, assisted by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), launched a search operation immediately. Despite intensive efforts, including underwater dives, no recovery was made in the first few days. Authorities had also been examining the possibility of suicide, though no concrete evidence has surfaced to confirm that theory. Meanwhile, in Assam, Rosmita’s family, unaware of her trip to Rishikesh, lodged a missing persons report at the Haflong Police Station. Her mother, Solmodi Hojai, stated that Rosmita had travelled to Delhi alone for the exam and had not informed them of her subsequent travel plans. The tragic confirmation came on June 10 when Debolal Gorlosa, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, announced her death in a heartfelt social media post. “It is with a heavy heart that I share that Miss Rosmita Hojai… has been found dead today in Pauri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand. This is an unthinkable loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with her grieving family,” he wrote. Gorlosa called for immediate legal action against the two individuals who had accompanied Rosmita and described the incident as “horrifying.” He also extended his gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Uttarakhand Police for their cooperation in the search operation. As of now, no arrests have been made, but police have initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Rosmita’s disappearance and death. Forensic examinations and statements from the two male companions are expected to play a crucial role in determining whether foul play was involved. The case has sparked widespread concern in Assam, with calls for justice echoing on social media platforms. Activists and community leaders have urged authorities to ensure a transparent and swift investigation to bring closure to the grieving family.
