Staff Reporter, Barpeta: In observance of World Environment Day, the District Administration of Barpeta launched a series of awareness initiatives on June 5, beginning with a symbolic celebration at Paanch Ali Chowk, the heart of the district headquarters. The highlight of the event was a compelling street play titled “Nodir Oxukh” (The Ailment of the River), staged by local artists. Organized jointly by the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department of Forest, and the District Administration, the performance aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution, particularly in rivers. Blending drama with traditional song and dance, the play served as a powerful reminder of the environmental degradation caused by irresponsible plastic disposal. District Commissioner (In-charge) Diganta Baishya, ACS, along with Additional District Commissioner Moushumi Chetia, ACS, Chairman of Barpeta Municipal Board Chabilal Das, and Cultural Officer Bidyut Bikash Das, were present at the event, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in environmental conservation. Speaking on the occasion, DC Baishya underlined the urgency of the issue. “Pollution levels are rising and plastic use is rampant. This street play is a wake-up call for everyone to act now and adopt eco-friendly habits,” he said.

Chabilal Das highlighted the significance of World Environment Day, urging citizens to adopt sustainable practices throughout the year. “Global warming and plastic waste are not one-day issues; they require ongoing community effort,” he noted. As part of the day’s activities, officials and staff planted saplings at Ashok Park in the town center and distributed plants to residents. Similar awareness and plantation drives were conducted across all Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) in the district. The event showcased Barpeta’s strong commitment to fostering environmental consciousness and community participation in the fight against plastic pollution and climate change.
