Assam Introduces Indian Sign Language as Elective for Class XI

Guwahati: In a landmark move towards inclusive education, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced the introduction of Indian Sign Language (ISL) as an elective subject for Class XI students across the state. The initiative is aimed at empowering students with hearing impairments and encouraging broader awareness and acceptance of accessible communication methods. Taking to social media, the Chief Minister stated, “In Assam, we have introduced Sign Language as an Elective subject in Class XI. This will benefit students with hearing issues and open up new opportunities for youth.” The state government confirmed that 70 students have already opted for the subject in the current academic year, signaling strong initial interest in the program. The initiative not only offers greater support for students with disabilities but also creates pathways for careers in interpretation, special education, and inclusive technology. This decision aligns with the National Education Policy’s focus on equity and inclusive practices, reinforcing Assam’s growing commitment to building accessible and learner-friendly environments in schools.
