A Correspondent, Guwahati: Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan landed in Guwahati last night, marking the start of a crucial four-day visit aimed at accelerating rural welfare initiatives in the Northeast. The visit, spanning Assam, Nagaland, and Mizoram, will spotlight the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and other flagship schemes designed to uplift rural communities.
Welcoming Chouhan at the airport, Assam Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass emphasized the importance of the tour. “Shivraj Singh Chouhan has come for a 4-day visit and will be attending programs across the entire Northeast. During this time, there is a strong possibility of progress on the allocation of houses left under the PM Awas Yojna,” Dass told reporters.
According to Dass, Assam has already completed the construction of more than 25 lakh houses under PMAY, though approximately 3.8 lakh units remain pending approval. “A survey is currently underway, and under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, we are working actively to ensure that the remaining beneficiaries receive their houses,” he said.
Chouhan’s itinerary includes a series of review meetings with state officials, on-ground inspections of PMAY projects, and direct interactions with scheme beneficiaries. The objective, officials say, is to identify bottlenecks in implementation and fast-track pending allocations.
The Centre has significantly ramped up its focus on the Northeast in recent years, with infrastructure development and social welfare at the core of its agenda. Chouhan’s visit is widely viewed as part of a broader push to ensure last-mile delivery of central schemes ahead of key political milestones.
With housing for all continuing to be a cornerstone of the Modi government’s rural development vision, the outcomes of this visit could shape both policy direction and public perception in the region.
