Seven Cows Rescued, Smuggler Flees After High-Speed Chase in Dhubri

Selim SK, Dhubri: In a decisive move against illegal cattle trafficking, Golakganj police successfully intercepted a luxury car used in smuggling and rescued seven cows packed inside. The operation, spearheaded by Golakganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Debajit Kalita, unfolded late Tuesday night along National Highway 17 near Biratnagar Chariali in Assam’s Dhubri district. Acting on a tip-off, a police team was deployed strategically along the highway. Their alertness paid off when they spotted a speeding Honda Amaze (registration AS 03H 7675) suspected to be part of a smuggling route. The vehicle, originating from West Bengal and heading towards Gauripur, ignored repeated signals to stop, triggering a high-speed chase. The pursuit culminated in North Raipur, where the suspect vehicle was finally intercepted. Seizing an opportunity under the cover of darkness, the driver abandoned the vehicle and managed to flee on foot. Upon inspection, police were shocked to find seven cows tightly crammed inside the vehicle, confirming suspicions of smuggling. The incident adds to a worrying trend of traffickers employing increasingly unconventional and audacious methods—from hiding cattle beneath sacks of potatoes to using boats, banana leaves, and now even sedans. This bust underscores the mounting challenge faced by law enforcement agencies despite tightened surveillance and ongoing crackdowns. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the absconding driver and are expanding investigations to expose the broader network behind this illicit trade. Police officials reaffirmed their commitment to curbing cattle smuggling in the region, citing the operation as a testament to their vigilance and swift action.
