Massive Fire Destroys ₹25 Crore Property Near Deepor Beel

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: A massive fire broke out past midnight on May 17 in Mikirpara, Pamohi, near the ecologically sensitive Deepor Beel wetland, causing extensive damage to properties estimated to be worth around ₹25 crore. The inferno reportedly originated in a warehouse belonging to VIP Industries Limited around 1:37 AM, according to local witnesses. Flames rapidly engulfed the area, and the fire raged for approximately four hours before personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) managed to bring it under control. Fire tenders from multiple stations, including Lokhora, Pandu, and Mirza, were deployed in a coordinated effort to contain the blaze. Their timely response prevented the fire from spreading further and potentially endangering nearby residential areas and the fragile wetland ecosystem of Deepor Beel. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. However, the scale of destruction has left a significant economic impact on the local industrial zone. Authorities are yet to confirm the cause of the fire. An investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances that led to the incident. Environmental experts have also raised concerns due to the proximity of the fire to Deepor Beel, a Ramsar site and a critical habitat for migratory birds. Further assessments will be conducted to evaluate any potential environmental damage.
