CM Sarma Reaffirms Vision for Viksit Assam at NITI Aayog Meet

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today highlighted Assam’s transformation journey at the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog in New Delhi. Themed “Viksit Rajya for Viksit Bharat @ 2047”, the meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking at the event, Dr. Sarma said the Assam government, with strong support from the Centre, has taken comprehensive steps to realise the vision of a developed Assam. “The pursuit of a Viksit Assam has long been a cherished aspiration. The Prime Minister’s vision of a Viksit Bharat gives us the opportunity to turn this into reality,” he stated. Recalling Assam’s pre-independence prosperity, Dr. Sarma said the state had a higher per capita income than the national average and enjoyed robust global connectivity through railways and inland waterways. However, the partition of 1947 and missed geopolitical opportunities in 1971 disrupted Assam’s links to international trade routes. He asserted that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the region is reclaiming its strategic and economic relevance, becoming a key gateway to Southeast Asia. Emphasising infrastructure, Dr. Sarma called for dedicated transport corridors, revival of waterways, and power subsidies to fuel industrial growth in the Northeast. Highlighting Assam’s economic progress, he cited a Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of USD 68.7 billion and a 19% growth in the last fiscal year. The government, he added, is investing in key sectors such as tourism, agriculture, electronics, and future-ready domains like green jobs and the circular economy. Dr. Sarma urged the Centre’s continued guidance to make Viksit Assam a benchmark of prosperity and inclusive development.
