Staff Reporter, Biswanath Chariali: Awareness programmes on vulture conservation and reproduction convened by Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre (VCBC), Rani and headed by environment scientist Ghanashyam Gogoi was held amongst the students of Bhaskarjyoti Adarsha Vidyapeeth and Chatia HSS today in two separate programmes. Addressing the programme, biologist Ghanashyam Gogoi stated about the importance of vultures in making our environment clean and fresh. He also talked about the adverse effects of pesticides and insecticides that affected the life cycle of vultures, pushing the environment-friendly bird on the verge of extinction. Environmentalist Gogoi cited the example of epic Ramayana wherein vulture was quoted as Jatayu pakshi. The vulture has been recognized and accepted by human society since time immemorial. Gogoi further added about the need of preserving the nature friendly bird and its importance in saving our surrounding environment alive. Ecologist Gogoi presented a demonstration on a projector and showed various types of vultures found in India. The awareness programme was followed by an interactive session. It is to be mentioned here that Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre (VCBC), Rani has established a vulture release centre at Tewaripal which shares boundary with the sixth edition of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, on the southern part of Sootea in the month of April this year. The event was attended by Dhirah Rabha, field officer, and a team from the forest department besides the students and teachers.
