Staff Reporter, Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya today inaugurated a two-day Conclave on “Development of the Fishery Sector in Assam, 2025” at the Assam Administrative Staff College. Organized by Raj Bhavan in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Assam, the conclave brings together leading fishery experts, researchers, and entrepreneurs to chart a roadmap for the sector’s growth. In his inaugural address, the Governor highlighted Assam's vast aquatic resources and stressed the potential of fisheries to drive sustainable livelihoods and rural prosperity. “With its rivers, wetlands, ponds, and reservoirs, Assam can transform its fishery sector into a self-reliant industry,” he said. Emphasizing the sector's role in the Blue Economy, Acharya urged integration of modern science, technological innovation, and sustainable practices. He lauded Central initiatives like PM Matsya Sampada Yojana and praised Assam’s own “Ghore-Ghore Pukhuri, Ghore-Ghore Maach” for encouraging household-level aquaculture. The Governor also called for species diversification and development of indigenous breeding technologies, citing underutilized native species and technological gaps as major hurdles. He expressed confidence that strategic outcomes from the conclave could boost Assam’s fish production capacity by 50% within 2–3 years. Fisheries Minister Krishnendu Paul set a target of 7 lakh tonnes of fish production by 2030 and stressed utilizing aquaculture opportunities within tea estates, beel fisheries, and forest water bodies. Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota, senior officials, and experts from ICAR and national fisheries institutes were also present. Day one featured five technical sessions covering water management, diversification, seed production, and marketing. The conclave aims to position Assam as a major fisheries export hub and a leading player in Southeast Asia’s aquaculture landscape.
