Staff Reporter, Guwahati, June 24: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, a prominent BJP leader from Assam, has taken oath as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha. He recently assumed charge of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways in New Delhi on June 11, marking his third term as a minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Sonowal’s political journey began with his leadership roles in student organizations like the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) during the 1990s. He transitioned into mainstream politics with his election to the Lok Sabha in 2004, representing the Asom Gana Parishad and winning against former Union Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar in Dibrugarh. In 2011, Sonowal joined the BJP, subsequently winning the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 from Lakhimpur. He was appointed Union Minister of State-Independent Charge in the Modi government in 2014, marking his entry into ministerial roles at the center. A significant milestone in Sonowal’s career came in 2016 when he became the Chief Minister of Assam, leading the BJP to its first electoral victory in the Northeast region. He served as Chief Minister until 2021, focusing on development initiatives and governance reforms during his tenure. Sonowal’s return to the Lok Sabha as a member and his ministerial portfolio in Ports, Shipping, and Waterways underscore his continued influence and leadership within the BJP, particularly in representing Assam’s interests at the national level.
