Staff Reporter, Guwahati, June 25: Assam Water Resources Minister Piyush Hazarika today chaired an important departmental meeting at his office at Janata Bhawan. The Minister held a detailed discussion with the Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department and other engineers in the presence of Professor Rajiv Bhattacharya of IIT Guwahati and Professor Bibhash Sharma of Assam College of Engineering .The minister asked the two experts about the flood control measures of the Kalajal river. Teo experts mentioned that there were technical problems in the construction of the embankments in Kalajal as result of the preliminary studies .However, the Minister urged the people to inform them about the work that the department can do to relieve them from the problems they are facing The minister also said that IIT Guwahati has been empowered to conduct a comprehensive study on the matter. Based on the report of their study, appropriate measures will be taken to control the Kalajal river floods, he said. There are many ways in which you can improve people's self-confidence and ability to respond to the challenges of life, the minister said. The meeting also discussed the need for a comprehensive study on the long-term solution to the flood problem in Assam. The Minister said that along with the current methods used by the department to control floods, a comprehensive study is needed for a long-term and far-reaching solution to the flood problem in the state. Therefore, it is necessary to take some time to find a comprehensive solution to the flood and erosion problem in the state through IIT Guwahati or any reliable institution if necessary. He said the government has been taking traditional methods of flood control like construction of embankments and sluice gates for the last 50 to 60 years. He added that the time has come to conduct a comprehensive study on how to control floods and erosion with the help of modern technology in the changing times . The meeting was also attended by Kamalpur and Sipajhar MLAs Diganta Kalita and Parmanand Rajbanshi respectively.
