Staff Reporter, Guwahati, August 26: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma attended as Chief Guest the 38th Annual General Meeting of the All Assam Karmachari Parishad held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra on Saturday. Speaking at the occasion, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said the All Assam Karmachari Parishad, since its inception, has been working relentlessly for furthering the interests of the employees of the Government of Assam and that of the State’s social life. Chief minister Dr. Sarma stated that the All Assam Karmachari Parishad has always been standing behind the Assamese community during difficult times such as the Asom Andolan (Assam Movement), adding that as many as 68 employees of Government of Assam had laid down their lives during that tumultuous period of the State’s history. Chief Minister Dr. Sarma credited the employees of the Government of Assam for their sincere attempts at trying to resolve outstanding issues and demands through the medium of dialogue. He said during his tenure as the State’s Minister of State for Finance in 2003, he took many initiatives aimed at finding solutions to the problems of the government employees.

Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said the employees of Government of Assam receive the Dearness Allowance hike in line with their central government counterparts. States such as West Bengal and many other States in Northeast do not pay their employees DA in the range paid by the central government to its employees but Assam is an exception and can be termed the first State in the country for bringing in DA parity between its employees and those of the central government, he added. Speaking about the commitments of the Government of Assam towards overall welfare of its employees, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said schemes and policies such as Apun Ghar, Apun Bahan, etc. have been designed and formulated with that aim in mind.
