Guwahati, September 6: A madrasa was demolished by locals from Darogar Alga in Pakhiura Char area in Assam’s Goalpara district on Tuesday. The locals alleged that the premises were used by two Bangladeshi nationals for terror activities, police said. They also razed the residence that was adjacent to the madrassa and was alleged that it belonged to two suspected Bangladeshi nationals involved in 'Jihadi activities'. As per official, the two Bangladeshi nationals identified as Aminul Islam and Jahangir Alom are members of an Al Qaeda affiliated outfit, and they taught at the madrasa between 2020-22. Police further said that Jalaluddin Sheikh who was already arrested for his alleged Jihadi activities had engaged Aminul Islam alias Usman alias Mehdy Hasan and Jahangir Alom, both absconding Bangladeshi Al-Qaeda Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) cadres. This was the fourth Assam madrasa to be demolished in the past one month over alleged links with the terror outfits. Earlier, the three madrassas in Barpeta, Morigaon and Bongaigaon districts were razed by the respective district administrations for their alleged links with Jihadi activities. The demolition of the madrassa came to light after following a day Assam’s director general of police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta met representatives of Islamic organisations in the state on Sunday. Meanwhile, Assam Congress MLAs have written to the National Commission for Minorities asking it to investigate the demolition of the madrasa in Bongaigaon. In a letter to the NCM chairperson Iqbal Singh Lalpura, Congress MP Abdul Khaleque and MLAs Pradip Sarkar, Abdur Rashid Mondal, Asif Nazar and Abdul Batin Khandakar alleged that the state government demolished the Markazul Ma-Arif Quariayana Madrassa in Bongaigaon "in blatant disregard to the rule of law".
