Biswanath Chariali, September 20: All Assam Gorkha students'Union (AAGSU) staged a sit-in demonstration at Chasal, Six Miles on Monday in favour of GAC (Gorkha Autonomous Council). Today's demonstration was supported by AGS (Assam Gorkha Sammelan), ANSS (Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha), BGP (Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha) and other Gorkha organisations. It is to be noted here that GAC is a long pending demand of the AAGSU which remained in a neglected way for a long time. AAGSU feels the need of GAC for safety, security and all round development of the Gorkha community which has been living in the state since pre-historic period. During the sit-in demonstration, the demonstrators shouted slogans in favour of GAC, demanded NOC from the state government for enlisting 11 sub-tribes of the Gorkha community into the ST list and to include the Gorkha community in the category of "indigenous Assamese" as stated in the clause six of the Assam Accord. At the end of the demonstration, the students' union submitted a three clause memorandum to the chief minister of Assam through Amrit Bhuyan, ACP (SB). Addressing a media gathering here, Arjun Chetry, the president of AAGSU said, 'GAC is our constitutional right. We will have it at any cost. We are ready for the supreme sacrifice to get our birth right from the government. If the state government doesn't act on our demand within a stipulated time, then we will go for strikes like hunger, road blockade etc.'
