Dr Abdulaziz Al Musallam, UAE hoist the National Flag at USTM

Staff Reporter, Guwahati, August 16: Along with the whole nation, the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has observed the 76th Independence Day in a grand way yesterday ending an eventful week-long celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav which began in the university since August 9. Dr Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of Sharjah Institute for Heritage, UAE graced the occasion as the Chief Guest of the programme. The tricolor was hoisted at the main sports ground of USTM at 9 in the morning by Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM in the presence of the Chief Guest Dr Musallam, Prof GD Sharma, VC, USTM, Prof Mohammed Basheer, former VC, University of Calicut, Kerala, Dr BK Das, Pro VC USTM and more than 5000 students and other participants. Addressing the huge gathering, Dr Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of Sharjah Institute for Heritage, UAE thanked the founder Chancellor of USTM for hospitality and achievement of the university. “It’s my great happiness to be here on this very special day. Whenever we talk of cultural heritage, we always mention India. Indians always keep their identity and at the same time rise in the path of education and progress”, he added. Dr Musallam was highly impressed by the presentation of the rich cultural heritage of the 8 NE states by USTM students. He has given assurance that students of USTM would be invited to represent North East India in world cultural fest. The Sharjah Institute for Heritage has been working with UNESCO in a global platform for cultural integration connecting people for peace and harmony. A colourful Cultural Procession and Cultural Showcase of all the north-eastern states of India was witnessed by many on the Independence Day at USTM which culminated at the Central Auditorium of the university. At the Auditorium, the students of USTM fascinated all present with spectacular presentations of patriotic songs as well as different folk and traditional dances of various communities of each of the eight states. The week-long programme began at USTM on August 9 for the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. More than 2000 residential students of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) took part in the “Azadi March” organized on the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav at the University campus. On August 12 a large group of students, including 7 Units of NSS Cell, organized a bike rally for distribution of National Flags amidst villagers within 5 kms radius of the University to materialize the dream of “Har Ghar Tiranga, Har Ghar Shiksha”. Moreover, different Departments of the USTM have also observed the week-long celebration under their departmental initiatives raising the spirit of patriotism.
