Nagaon, June 22: The president of college alumni association and local MLA Rupak Sarma today ceremonially inaugurated 'Sarothi - the Time Bank' - a special cell newly constituted for welfare of the isolated as well as abandoned people at the historic Nowgong College (autonomous) which is scheduled to be promoted to a state university by government. The bank was set up for the first time in Switzerland in India. The Internal Quality Assurance Cell in association with the college union body, NSS Unit 1 and NSS Unit 2 took initiatives to set up the time bank in the college. The inaugural programme was chaired by Dr Sarat Borkatoki, principal of the college and also delivered the welcome address while Dr Bhuban Chandra Chutiya, the coordinator to Internal Quality Assurance Cell anchored the entire programme. Almost all teachers, students and other non teaching staff of the college opened up their respective accounts in the time bank and MLA Rupak Sarma distributed some of the passbooks of the bank among the concerned accounts holders even in the inaugural programme.

In his inaugural speech, MLA Sarma applauded the college authority for taking up such initiatives to help those helpless people of the society. Sarma also promised to provide an ambulance and two oxygen concentrators from his MLA fund to the newly setup time bank. Besides, he also promised to provide other support towards the bank from time to time in the days to come. During the programme Bidisha Devi who secured the highest rank in 2022 in Geography, was felicitated by the authority concerned of the college. Hundreds of students, non teaching staff and teachers of the college including vice principal duo Dr Ramprasad Porel and Banti Neog were among those who participated in the inaugural programme, a release added.
