Announces Rs. 1 crore for Gomdhar Konwar Memorial Committee

Dispur, Sept 15: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today paid rich tributes to the statue of Gomdhar Konwar, the Ahom prince who started the first revolt against the British at Gomdhar Konwar Memorial Garden at Mariani in Jorhat today. Speaking at a programme organised by Gomdhar Konwar Memorial Committee, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said that Gomdhar Konwar led the state in putting up its first resistance against the British Raj in Assam. Starting a revolt against the British, Gomdhar Konwar showed his love for independence vis a vis his mother land. However, people in the country hardly know about him. Therefore, the State government has taken a resolve to take appropriate steps for due national recognition for this unsung hero. Gomdhar Konwar Memorial Committee also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister enlisting their demands. Receiving the memorandum, Chief Minister Sarma for promotion and preservation of some of the actions of the Memorial Committee, announced Rs. 1 crore. Moreover, the State government under Asom Mala scheme would rebuild ‘Dhodorali’ which is the life line of Mariani. Dr. Sarma also announced that the State government would do the needful for the treatment of Dr. Jintu Hazarika, the eminent dramatist, academician and the founder secretary of Gomdhar Konwar Memorial Committee who is suffering from acute illness. Education Minister Dr. Ranuj Pegu, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan, MPs Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, Topon Kumar Gogoi, former MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi were also present on the occasion.
