News Desk, Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma today chaired the inaugural meeting of the Mizoram Security Coordination Committee in Aizawl, marking a significant step toward strengthening the state's border security and internal safety mechanisms. The newly formed committee aims to streamline coordination among various departments and agencies responsible for safeguarding the state. A major focus of the meeting was the security situation along Mizoram’s international borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, as well as internal boundaries shared with neighbouring states. Officials discussed the pressing issue of border infiltration and the movement of armed groups, underscoring the need for a cohesive strategy to manage these threats. One key development addressed was the situation along the Tripura-Mizoram border, particularly near New Kawnpui. The temporary check post and sentry shed set up by the Tripura State Rifles have now been removed following high-level discussions between the Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police of both states. The resolution of the matter through dialogue was appreciated as a positive example of inter-state cooperation. The committee also flagged drug trafficking as Mizoram’s most serious criminal challenge. In 2024, 338 drug-related cases were filed under the ND&PS Act. As of May 2025, 114 more cases have been registered. Authorities have seized large quantities of illicit drugs, including over 648 kg of methamphetamine tablets valued at Rs. 84 crore and 5 kg of crystal meth worth approximately Rs. 15.5 crore. Rising cases under the POCSO Act and human trafficking were also discussed. Last year saw 47 human trafficking cases with 56 arrests, while this year has already recorded 34 cases and 51 arrests up to May. Additional issues raised included enhancing the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, improving implementation of the One Nation One Ration Card scheme—particularly for displaced persons from violence-hit Manipur—and easing travel procedures for foreign tourists. The Chief Minister emphasized that security and social welfare must go hand in hand, and called for sustained collaboration among state and central agencies to maintain peace and stability in Mizoram.
