Staff Reporter, Gossaigaon: In a major breakthrough against the illegal timber trade, Assam’s Gossaigaon police seized a large consignment of red sandalwood worth over ₹1 crore during a late-night operation near the Telipara toll gate on the town’s outskirts. Acting on a confidential tip-off, the operation was led by Gossaigaon Sub-Divisional Police Officer Hiren Kumar Deka, with Officer-in-Charge Nitul Gogoi and team. The police had received intelligence that red sandalwood was being illegally stored in a house near the toll gate. Swiftly responding, the team surrounded the premises and recovered 28 logs of red sandalwood, each weighing approximately 35 kilograms. The seized timber has been transported to the Gossaigaon police station for secure storage. Authorities have refrained from disclosing the identity of the homeowner to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation. Police officials stated that further details will emerge as the inquiry progresses, with efforts underway to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the smuggling network. This seizure underscores the high-value nature of the red sandalwood trade and the continuing threat posed by timber smuggling in the region. The police have called for increased community cooperation to help combat such illegal activities and protect forest resources.
