Staff Reporter, Cachar: In a major breakthrough in the war against narcotics, Assam Police successfully seized drugs valued at ₹45 crore in the Cachar district. The crackdown, carried out over two consecutive raids based on credible intelligence inputs, led to the arrest of four individuals involved in drug peddling. The seized contraband includes a substantial quantity of Yaba tablets—popularly known as "party drugs"—which are increasingly being trafficked through the northeastern corridor of India. Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma lauded the efforts of the Cachar Police in a social media post, calling the operation a critical step in dismantling a larger narcotics syndicate operating in the region. “Assam Police stands firm in protecting our youth,” Sarma wrote, reaffirming his government's unwavering commitment to eradicating the drug menace from the state. He further stressed the importance of such operations in safeguarding the future of young generations. In a parallel development, the Assam Rifles, acting on intelligence inputs from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), seized heroin and amphetamine/methamphetamine tablets worth ₹5 crore at a check post in Noney. The drugs were ingeniously concealed in 50 soap cases and 49 sachets. Meanwhile, in Mizoram's Kolasib district, the Border Security Force (BSF) recovered 7.042 kg of pseudoephedrine tablets valued at ₹7.04 lakh during a targeted search operation. One individual was apprehended in connection with the seizure. Authorities have confirmed that all the narcotics recovered in these separate incidents were smuggled in from neighbouring Myanmar, pointing to the cross-border dimension of the illicit drug trade. These seizures come as part of an intensified anti-narcotics drive across the northeastern states. Assam Police, in coordination with other law enforcement agencies, have ramped up surveillance along major transit routes, particularly those bordering Myanmar and other northeastern states. “With the drug trade posing a serious threat to youth and community safety, authorities have intensified surveillance and enforcement,” said Chief Minister Sarma, emphasizing the state’s proactive stance. In earlier operations, security agencies had seized drugs worth over ₹5.7 crore in Manipur and Mizoram, underlining the persistent and complex nature of the narcotics challenge in the region. These coordinated and multi-agency operations signal a renewed and aggressive stance against drug trafficking in the Northeast, reinforcing the government’s resolve to disrupt and dismantle organized drug networks endangering the region’s socio-economic fabric.
