News Desk, Shillong: In a major push for regional air connectivity, the Meghalaya government signed key agreements with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Monday to operationalize the long-awaited Baljek Airport in West Garo Hills. The agreements—covering Operations & Maintenance (O&M) and Communications, Navigation & Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM)—will enable the airport to handle 20-seater aircraft, marking a critical milestone in the state’s aviation infrastructure development. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma hailed the signing as a landmark step in Meghalaya’s long-term aviation strategy. “This sets the stage for future expansion, including the development of infrastructure to accommodate larger aircraft like the ATR-72,” Sangma said. He emphasized the strategic value of Baljek Airport, citing its location as a key factor in positioning it as a future logistics hub with access to neighbouring countries. Calling it a foundational move for the next “30 to 50 years,” the Chief Minister lauded the efforts of the State Transport Department and AAI for their role in bringing the project closer to reality. The operationalization of Baljek Airport is expected to significantly improve connectivity in the western region of Meghalaya, spur economic development, and enhance access to remote areas of the Garo Hills. Officials confirmed that work on related infrastructure will soon begin, with commercial flight operations anticipated in the near future.
