Staff Reporter, Guwahati: In a remarkable tribute to Assam’s indigenous cultural legacy, the play Kholang Burhi, rooted in the folk traditions of the Thengal Kachari community, had its ceremonial launch at the New Art Player’s meeting house in Guwahati Club. The production marks the first theatrical venture by one of the state’s leading cultural institutions, Mejangkori Meghmallar.
The evening began on an auspicious note as veteran film actress Mridula Barua inaugurated the event by lighting the traditional lamp. The occasion was graced by several prominent personalities, including Dr. Alekhya Barua, Vice Chairman of the Assam State Film Finance and Development Corporation; theatre stalwart Satyabrata Barua; actor Amitabh Rajkhowa; and other noted figures from Assam’s cultural and artistic circles.
The play has been penned by Binoy Saikia, with conceptualization and direction by Simanta Phukan. Spearheading the production's planning and management is Manasi Dutta, whose efforts have brought together an impressive team of performers and creatives.
Scheduled for its full-stage premiere on June 29 at the Sri Sri Madhavdev Auditorium within Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, Kholang Burhi brings to life the myths, values, and vibrant stories of the Thengal Kachari people.
Leading the cast is Chumki Kachari in the titular role. The ensemble also includes Dr. Alekhya Barua, Mala Goswami, Parag Baruah, Prayash Phukan, Ananya Saikia, Sudipta Sharma Bharali, and Ashramika, each portraying characters that weave together the cultural narrative of the play.
Blending traditional storytelling with theatrical innovation, Kholang Burhi is set to become a landmark production that not only celebrates a lesser-known ethnic heritage but also marks a significant milestone in the journey of Assamese theatre.
