GP Singh hints to lift AFSPA by October

Staff Reporter, Sibsagar, September 13: State Police Chief GP Singh today visited Sivasagar and met the SP Sivasagar Subhrajyoti Bora and the Senior Police Officers of Sivasagar and Charaideo.In the hour long discussion,the DGP took stock of the law and order situation, the performance of the district police in Sivasagar and Charaideo and other related issues.He expressed satisfaction over their performance and urged them to improve further as the state police is lagging far behind the national goal in this regard. Later when asked about the high crime rate in the state, Sing told the media persons that the crime scenario in the state is gradually improving. He said that the conviction rate was just above 5.7 p.c. in Dec 2021 and it has improved to 14.8 p.c. in August 2023. Further, a major thrust has been given in rooting out corruption. Bringing down the crime curve will take some more time as it is related to a labyrinth of other factors. He said that Assam Police has recommended lifting the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Assam as the security situation is well under control.The Centre may finally abrogate it from October next. About accused ASP Subhalaksmi Dutta, the DGP pointed out that the police must have all the material proof to establish a crime and hence it is taking the time and the investigation is on.
