Me Dam Me Phi observed at Sootea

Staff Reporter, Biswanath Chariali, January 31: The festival offering worship to the ancestors by the Ahoms is known as Me Dam Me Phi. Every year the rituals and obligations have been performed and offered respectively to the ancestors on January 31. This year too is no exception to this. All sections of people belonging to the Ahom community observed this special day as a tradition throughout the state. The Historic Resources Conservation Committee, Sootea in collaboration with the general public had organised the special day at Mula Gabharu Moidam located at Solahola village in the northern part of Sootea with a day-long programme. At the very beginning of the programme, traditional rituals were performed for Gods and forefathers which was followed by a public meeting with Karunananda Hatibarua, president of the Historic Resources Conservation Committee in the chair. Dipali Bora Hazarika, principal of Chatia Junior College graced the occasion as an appointed speaker who had highlighted the importance and significance of Me Dam Me Phi and recalled the contributions of Mula Gabharu. Bandana Gogoi, assistant professor of the department of History, Biswanath College attended the event as another speaker who traced the historical background of the Ahom kingdom and the role of Sootea during the Ahom regime. She further cited the examples of the Ghiladhri and Dekorai battle and how Mula Gabharu sacrificed her life while fighting. Addressing the gathering as chief guest, Sootea MLA Padma Hazarika praised the organizing committee for making people aware about the Moidam of Mula Gabharu which has been in a deplorable condition and for taking timely initiative for preservation of the historic asset. Hazarika also traced the glorious history of the Ahom rule. The programme was attended by Biswanath SP Navin Singh, ASP Kulendra Nath Deka, vice chairman of Assam Animal Husbandry Paresh Borkakaty, Circle officer of Naduar Revenue Circle Akashdeep Kakaty besides other dignitaries. Ananda Handiqe, vice president of the organizing committee explained the objectives while Uttam Kumar Nath, secretary of the organizing committee subsequently offered a vote of thanks.
