East zone inter university handball and chess concludes

Staff Reporter, Guwahati, January 31: The East Zone Inter University Handball (Women) and Chess (Women) Tournaments 2022-23 concluded successfully with the valedictory ceremony held yesterday evening at the playground of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM). These zonal-level tournaments were organised by USTM under the aegis of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi. The prizes were handed over to the players by Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM, in the presence of referees, arbiters, students and sports enthusiasts. Total of 26 universities under the East zone participated in the two disciplines in the women’s category. Addressing the players, Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque said that the University is emphasising the development of sports along with academics. “I am delighted to tell you that USTM has recently acquired 100 acres of land to develop a Sports Village'', he said. In the handball tournament, a total of 28 teams had sent entries of interest for the tournament and 22 teams came for participation, with 392 players along with coaches and managers. The matches were played as per AIU norms and criteria. All the teams were divided into four pools and 18 matches were held for knockout rounds. The pool toppers then proceeded to play 6 league matches to secure positions. VPSU Jaunpur team was the winner and the University of Calcutta was the runner-up in the handball tournamnet. The Manipur University was in the third position, while HY Vishwavidyalaya Durg was placed fourth. In the Chess tournament, 22 teams participated. The first position went to the team of Adamas University Kolkata; the second position was grabbed by the University of Calcutta, the third position was secured by Jadavpur University while Atal Bihari Vajpayee University was placed in the fourth. The Board I winner was Arpita Mukherjee from Adamas University, the board II winner was Angira Choudhuri from Jadavpur University, the board III winner was Diya Chowdhury from Adamas University and the board IV winner was Asmita Das from Adamas University. Dr Kangkan Jyoti Sarma was the organising secretary of the handball tournament and Subhash Limbu acted as the organising secretary of the Chess tournament. The chess arbiters include Pranab Kr Nath, Monimala Sinha, Homen Chandra Rabha and Paresh Rajbongshi. The referees nominated for the handball tournament were Rajack Ali, Sourav Bhagat, Ashique Ali Waris, Samiruj Ali, Mamu Khanikar Begum, Nabo Barman, Rupam Choudhury, Champa Laskar, Jiben Singh, Dulu Das, Surjya Thapa, Utpal Deka, Siddhartha Barman (Tech-official) and Dr Surjya Kanta Paul (Match-official).
