Outreach programme on pig farming held at KVK, Nagaon

Bureau Report, Nagaon, December 20: The Advanced Level State Biotech Hub funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India, established in the Department of Animal Biotechnology of College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, Guwahati, conducted a two days outreach program for farmers and entrepreneurs since Monday on the topic 'scientific management of commercial pig farm with special reference to biosecurity' in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nagaon simultaneously at two places respectively at KVK, Nagaon campus, Simaluguri as well as at Raha sub market campus. The programme concluded today. Over 30 pig farmers representing 6 various villages of Nagaon district participated in the programme. In the inaugural session, Dr Niranjan Deka, Head, KVK, Nagaon explained about the potential of piggery in livelihood upliftment of farmers. Dr Dhireswar Kalita, Head, Animal Genetics and Breeding, elaborated on the contributions of CVSc, AAU, Khanapara towards farming community through research and technological guidance. Dr Prabodh Borah, Head, Animal Biotechnology, CVSc, AAU, Khanapara addressed the farmers to adopt biosecurity measures to save their pigs from epidemics. He also asserted that only with the cooperation with farmers, all kinds of epidemics could be controlled and eradicated in future. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Sinki Barman, SMS, Agri Economics & Farm Management while the programme was anchored by Dr Animesh Deka, SMS, Animal Science. Apart from the farmers, all staff of KVK, Nagaon were present in the programme. Meanwhile in the technical sessions, Dr Dhireswar Kalita, Dr Pankaj Deka, Dr Deepak Deka, Dr Utpal Talukdar & Dr Animesh Deka participated as resource persons to strengthen the knowledge of the farmers in the piggery sector. The programme was concluded with a practical session at Raha sub market campus - a private farm where farmers were being trained about the routine management, health care, vaccination, sample collection etc. The whole programme was coordinated by Dr Animesh Deka, SMS, Animal Science, KVK, Nagaon, a release added.
